2023-2024 Validation Information Steers & Heifers

Steer & Heifer Validation Information

Validation will be by appointment on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 from 8 – 11:30 a.m. at Schneider Brahmans, 1571 Alfred Petsch Rd, Fredericksburg or Monday, June 26th at Gillespie Vet Center, 402 S Creek St, Fredericksburg from 6 – 8:30 p.m.

If you have a conflict please contact Emily ASAP as due to several other 4-H and Extension activities she has limited availability in June to do alternative validations!

Steer & Heifer validation is approaching very soon, and we just wanted to let you know about some important things to consider prior to bringing your cattle to validation.  Please note that any animal that you are planning to show this fall or next spring (2024 Gillespie County Youth Livestock show or Texas Majors) MUST be validated. At validation, a tag will be placed in your animal’s ear, hair will be taken for DNA.  Please note that this does not enter your animals into a stock show; this is only the validation process.  We will notify you of all these deadlines for entry as soon as we can – please make sure to check the master 4-H calendar for all deadlines!

Important Things to Know About Steer & Heifer Validation

  • A Parent Must be Present to sign validation paperwork – the youth exhibitor is not required to be present, but a parent is required.

  • You don’t need to bring any information with you to validation unless you have a heifer.  You do not need to bring Quality Counts numbers or social security numbers to validation; this information will be required for stock show entries.

  • Gillespie County Youth Livestock Show Animals – all steers and heifers that will be shown at the Gillespie County Youth Livestock Show must be validated.

  • Ethics policy – each exhibitor and parent will be required to sign an ethics policy.  The address that goes on the ethics policy needs to be the address where the animals are fed and cared for.  Please make sure that you know what this address is before arriving at validation.   There are a lot of words on the ethics policies, so if you would like to read it ahead of time before signing, we have attached one to this email.  *PLEASE note in the ethics policy “all state validated livestock should be housed at the home of the livestock exhibitor or a family member or at a county or school ag facility” If livestock is housed at a different location families will need to complete alternative housing documentation which must be approved by the county state validation committee. The link to access the Ethics policy forms is at the bottom of the page

  • Email Address – you will be asked to provide a validation email address on your family’s validation form.  Please check the automated emails that you will receive from the Texas Livestock Validation system to make sure that all information has been entered correctly.  You will receive an email within 5-10 days of the validation date.

  • Extra tags – we have a limited number of extra steer & heifer tags in our county; if you want an extra tag, we encourage you to contact the office ASAP.

  • Registration Certificates - If you have a heifer, we are required to upload each registration certificate, so you can either email certificates to tiffany.ahrens@ag.tamu.edu or bring them to the Extension Office.  NOTE:  Both sides of the registration papers should be scanned and emailed.

**** One Ethics policy must be filled out for EACH animal Shown, and EACH exhibitor****

If you have any questions about steer and heifer validation, please contact us prior to your validation date.  Brad Roeder and Emily Grant can be reached at 830-997-3452.
