Crystal Clear Vitality: The Essence of Fresh Water in 4-H Livestock Projects

The secret to a thriving 4-H
livestock project often bubbles down to one fundamental element: clean, fresh
water. Ensuring that our animals have consistent access to pure water is not
merely a matter of hydration but is pivotal for their overall health,
digestion, and nutrient absorption. Especially for our diligent sheep and goat
exhibitors, consider this - the quality of water directly correlates with the
well-being and performance of your livestock. It’s my suggestion that
exhibitors prioritize cleaning water containers daily and undertake a thorough
scrubbing with a brush at least once a week. This practice not only keeps water
free from contaminants and algae but also encourages your animals to drink
adequately, supporting optimal growth and development. Dive into a commitment
where every drop counts, ensuring that our livestock not only survives but
thrives spectacularly in the limelight of the show ring.

Home Sweet Home

By now, you should have most of your pigs in the barn for the upcoming season which means waterers/nipples should be running well and it should be a clean source of water plus your pigs should be on a good feed regimen, feeding twice a day is best.

Also, your pigs for the county show should be trained for the show ring at this point and if not, they should be close. Walking at least once a day is a key to get them to stay in good habit, this does not mean to walk until they are exhausted but so they know what their job is. Keep them happy. It doesn’t matter how good your pig is, if they can’t show.

If you ever need help with your project please contact our office and set up an appointment with Brad or Emily.
